(1890-1969) [Commentary from the publisher, NOT printed on the card.] The bloodiest century in human history has just ended but we show no signs of having learned anything from killing 180-200 million people in war, genocides, famines and political oppression. At least 33 million military personel died while another 50-55 million civilians were killed directly by wars and violent conflicts. To understand this century of violence, one need look no further than the logic of capitalism and the periodic crises it engenders. The First World War marked the end of the first experiment in unfettered movement of capital and the crisis of overproduction that resulted. The next experiment in unregulated capitalism brought us, in order, a stock bubble, a stock market crash (1929), a depression that dominoed around the world and the necessary war to once again get business back on its feet. War has been very good for business these past hundred years but it has become increasingly lethal for innocent bystanders. Maybe it's time to take back control of the business of war so that we may pursue the business of peace instead.
