Tamara Natalie Madden was born in Jamaica and settled in the USA. Her life was blighted by illness, but she found solace and success in art, creating work that sought to heighten the overlooked and forgotten, focusing on the intrinsic beauty of each individual. She used golden washes, bright colours and silk fabrics to evoke a sense of regality in each of her paintings. Her pieces have been featured in many publications and collected worldwide. Sadly Tamara passed away in 2017 at the age of 42, leaving an impressive body of work. This stunning calendar features 12 of her artworks that bestow nobility and grace upon the poor, the neglected and the everyday.

Tamara Madden was an artist and professor of art and visual culture at Spelman College in Atlanta. Taking inspiration from her homeland, Gustav Klimt, and Milwaukee artist Ras ‘Ammar Nsoroma—among others—Madden often depicted powerful Black women of the African diaspora, royal and draped in elaborate headdresses and lavish ensembles. Madden struggled most of her adult life with chronic health issues, and turned to art for a semblance of normalcy and relief. She tragically died in 2017 at the age of 42, but her work lives on to represent her strength and unique point of view. The 12 images in this calendar offer a window into her inspiring life and legacy.
