The Sun -- Also known as "Sol", is a burning sphere of gas powered by a raging storm of atomic fusion in its core.
Middle-aged at about 5 billion Earth-years, it is rather small for a star, yet contains well over 99% of all the material in the Solar System, and is more than a million times the size of little planet Earth.
Though not much of a picnic spot itself, Sol provides a wonderfully warm and steady source of light with which to see the amazing assortment of worlds that circle it.
