Why do so many people hate immigrants? We've got more than we need and enough to spare so why are we so pro-sharing when teaching our toddlers but so against it in adult life?
It could be that we are greedy by nature, or it could be that we are misled by those who benefit from our xenophobic panic that there isn't enough to go around.
When big business eliminates our jobs to make a profit, they would prefer that we blamed 'immigrants' for long unemployment lines.
When politicians pander to the rich by cutting taxes so that social programs suffer, they prefer that we think it's the immigrants overburdening the system.
When our children can't learn in classrooms of 35 students, those who cut the funding for education prefer that we blame the 10 immigrant kids in the class whose language skills demand too much teacher attention.
When we are stressed by living in overcrowded urban centers with insufficient infrastructure, it's better for those who've sent the money to the gated communities in the suburbs that we blame the poor immigrants crammed into the cities with us for our stress.
Blaming the immigrants really takes the pressure off the power elite. Of course, it's easier to blame powerless people and vent our rage on them, they can't fight back. But if we really want to see changes, we're going to have to engage those with the power to make them. There really is enough to go around if we could just see things more clearly.
